7 Things I Want My Daughter to Know
As I look at my five-month-old daughter and see the limitless possibilities that she has in front of her, I have been pondering what it is that I want her to know as she makes her way in this world. Here is a shortlist:
1. Be active in, and be of service to your community. Make your community better for your having been there.
2. Always have a creative outlet that is just for you, whether it is visual art, music, crafts, or something equally as awesome. Having a creative outlet will serve you well both in times of joy and sorrow.
3. It is essential to have great taste in music, from Bach's Goldberg Variations to Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Music will serve as the soundtrack of your life — choose wisely (and let your dad help you)!
4. If you decided that you prefer women to men, your mom, and I don't care, we love you, unconditionally. Just make sure that you invite us to gay bars — we'll still be fun!
5. Know how your dad defines certain words: "Trying" is "looking good while failing." "Courage" is "taking action in the face of fear." Never "try" — instead, "achieve." And always choose to be a courageous person.
6. Travel the world. Learn French and at least one other language. The ability to speak with people who cannot speak your language will allow you to meet fascinating new people that you couldn't converse with otherwise, and absorb other cultures besides your own.
7. Discover the joy of cooking and of sitting down for a shared meal. Food not only feeds the body, but nourishes the soul. Conversations, reflection, and learning all take place over a great meal.
