The Force of Destiny
I am very excited about our February 15 performance entitled The Force of Destiny because there are so many simultaneously converging elements that point towards an exciting destiny for music in Longmont!
As many of you know, Longmont was recently designated the No. 1 "Boomtown" in the United States. Having been voted the fastest growing town in America speaks volumes about Longmont's future and allows Americans to see what an incredible place Longmont is to be!
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of working with the Saint Vrain Valley School District High School Honors orchestra students to bring together a performance of very challenging music. Working hand in hand with the fantastic SVVSD music educators to bring forth the best of these exceptional young musicians, I realized just how bright the future of classical music is for our region. Inspiring the next generation of music lovers and professional musicians has always been a passion of mine, which is why I am so excited that our February 15 performance includes the wonderful young musicians of the Longmont Youth Symphony. They will be sitting side-by-side the seasoned musicians of the Longmont Symphony for what will be a rousing finale to our performance, Respighi's Pines of Rome. The LSO will also be performing Verdi's Overture to The Force of Destiny as well as The Red Violin: Chaconne for Violin and Orchestra from the Academy Award-winning film, The Red Violin. This work tells the story of the violin as it finds its way back to its rightful owner through the centuries.
All of these stories of destiny lead me to think about what the future holds for music in Longmont. As the performing arts community anxiously await the results of Johnson Consulting's feasibility study to ascertain if the construction of a new, state of the art, performing arts center, I cannot help but think that this program is one that will help us usher in an exciting new future for the arts in Longmont. The destiny that I envision for Longmont is one with a vibrant and visible arts scene, one which is part of our daily way of life, where children have instruments in their hands, where the art and the artists are accessible to our residents, and where live symphonic music is embedded into the fabric of who we are.
